Subnautica is a game that I personally think is one of the best of its genre.It is a survival game with the setting set in an ocean on an alien planet. Most people will complete this game in about 15 to 30 hours. And for me personally, those hours where some of the best I have ever experienced in a video game.
Something I enjoy in video games is learning new mechanics. Because this game stands on its own, you will learn how all your tools work and how the ocean mechanics work by your own exploration. Your main goal in the game is to escape this alien planet and as you explore you will probably end up in a scary situation more than once. The game is not listed as a horror game but the sound and environments in this game create such an uncomfortable setting that I had to calm myself down during some segments. This is in my opinion amazing game design as their really are not any jump scares and all the fear comes from the design of the world. The main fear for more people will be going deeper into the ocean and as you play the game more you will fear the depths less.
My one and only complaint of the game would be that the pacing towards the end of the story gets a little boring. Without spoiling anything, you end up doing some fetch quest type objectives and although it is not awful it really sticks out compared to the rest of the experience that I think is amazing.
In the end I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of survival games. It is such a unique experience that will forever be one of my favorite games of all time.
